1. Periodization: avoid wherever possible to combine harvested fish transport and smolt transports. Although harvest fish apparently looks healthy, latently infected fish can be a problem w.r.t excretion of pathogens.

2. Cleaning: the most important measure to ensure that the vessel does not contain large organic tissue samples (whole or parts of fish) prior to disinfection, since no disinfectant penetrates into larger tissue samples.

3. Disinfection: system that ensure a homogeneous mixing of the disinfectant with high enough concentration and sufficient duration.

4. Closed transport: prevents exposure of pathogens along the transport route.

5. Work procedures and check lists: have working procedures and check lists that ensure that items 1-4 are followed.
